Show

The Nanaimo Kennel Club encourages the development of purebred dogs through education, events and shows. Conformation shows are often mistakenly dismissed as "beauty contests." Behind all the primping, parading and colourful ribbons lies their true purpose, the production of physically and mentally healthy dogs. In dog shows each breed is judged against a nationally written standard to maintain the specific traits unique to that breed. The NKC holds shows once a year, matches once a year and show handling classes weekly. Dog breeds are classified into seven groups, based on their physical structure and the origin and traditional purpose of the breed.

Agility

The most fun you can have with your dog! Agility is patterned after equestrian jumping events. The dog negotiates an obstacle course with various jumps, tunnels, A-frame, walkover, teeter totter and weave poles. The handler's job is to guide the dog safely to and over the obstacles. Working in agility helps to build a strong bond with your dog.

The Nanaimo Kennel Club's experienced class instructors are working with their own dogs at competition level. Training is done strictly on a motivational and reward basis.

Rally-O

Rally-Obedience, or Rally-O as it is often called, offers a new and different approach to dog obedience. Rally-O emphasizes fun and a relaxed approach, where dog and handler follow directional signs to run through a numbered course within an allotted time. The handler may encourage the dog during a trial. Participation of all dogs is encouraged, purebred or mixes, as well as physically handicapped dogs or handlers.

Flyball

Flyball is a fast and exciting sport not only for handlers and spectators but also for the dogs. A flyball team consists of four dogs and their handlers, and a box loader. The object is to have each dog on the team go over a series of four jumps, trigger the ball box to launch a ball into the air, catch the ball and return with it over all four jumps to where the next dog eagerly awaits its turn in the relay race.

The Nanaimo Kennel Club's flyball classes will help to get you started and to compete in this exhilarating sport.

The Training Facility

The Nanaimo Kennel Club training classes are held at the Centennial Building in
Beban Park, Nanaimo, British Columbia. The Centennial Building was constructed to commemorate Canada's Centennial.
In the mid 1980's the Nanaimo Kennel Club moved and saved this historical site from demolition.  This was through the injection of a great deal of money and many hours of labour, all by our Club's Volunteers .

Important reminder to all users! All dogs must be leashed in Beban Park and it's surrounding grounds. The exception is the designated 'Off-Leash' area and the Centennial training lawn (during training). Please do not allow your dogs to run free on the Park Grounds at any time.

Always pick up after your dog. Thank you.
